I honestly believe that blogging is not one of my special talents but I think this is a great way of communicating. I really thought that having a blog in this class was awesome. It really lets you express your own opinion and thoughts about certain topics the way that you want to explain it. I like that fact that not only are my teachers reading them but also my classmates and sometimes just random people (My boyfriend) trying to see if I say anything bad that might affect them lol! I bet he's reading this one as well (Luv you). I absolutely think that blogging should be required for other classes as well because it gives students the opportunity to talk about certain issues that affect their lives and you they can discover that they are not the only people who thinks the way they do. And also some opposition to certain topics broaden your view about the topic tremendously. The conclude this all I have to say is that I give blogging four thumbs up (big toes included)!

Blog 10

I think I have reached a point of school over load! I don't ever want to take more that 20 credit hours ever again! LOL! Okay but the truth is that this class is very interesting. I think I've learned more in this class than all of my other classes combined. This weeks topic was very interesting about the state, law, and social policy. Throughout the entire I just kept thinking about an issue today. This issue is about Hilary Clinton running for president. At first I was pretty skeptical about it but now that I have taken the time and actually heard her views about the government I feel she is a strong candidate. She is not being taken seriously though because of the fact that she is a woman and was first wife to a previous president. All that shouldn't matter what should matter is her qualifications and what she could bring to the table.

Another issue the stood out was homosexuals in the army. I did not know that we still give discharges even after President Bill Clinton established the "Don't ask don't tell" policy. This is because this policy has very few support because some people in society think homosexuals pose a national security threat. I just think that military people think that they will be hit on by homosexuals that would make them feel uncomfortable. But that is dumb because people who enlist enlist for a purpose not to meet men and women to hit on. Everyone who enlist enlist because they think they have what it takes to be in the military like discipline and that is their main priority so how can anyone be a national threat if they are volunteering to defend ones country.

Blog 9

Violence toward women will always hit close to home. It is true that everyone at least knows one woman this has happened to. I am not the exception, I never like to talk about it to poeple I don't know and especially not on the internet for the whole world to know but i just know if certain happenings had not happened I would not be the person I am today. I just don't understand why violence against women is a major issue still today the patriarchy is just getting stronger and stronger. Yes we do have programs that help women and children that were beaten or raped but this doesn't solve the actual problem. This problem goes way back to someones upbringing and nowadays parents spend less time with their children because of financial neccessities and other circumstances, what does this say about the future adults in our society that are highly influenced by violent video games and television? I think violence against women is going to get worse as we progress if we do not stand up and say something about it. Women usually do not want to say andything about spousal abuse because they are afraid of the consiquences that their spouse will face. Also immidiate action is not taken by police enforcment when a spousal violence arises, yes they might take them to jail to stay overnight but what is to say about the next day. The spouse is going to have a vengence toward the other spouse and may lead to seriouse injuries or death. this is where the government is slacking and women are as well. We need to realize that once a spouse starts beating or battering us we need to find a way out as quickly as possible before it leads to the worst. Yes some women do get out of it but others do not because they are scared. We just have to increase our own self value in order to accomplish a healthy lifestyle.

Blog 8

Well I'm really not sure if we have to post a new blog this week but I sure did comment on someone else's from UNT Krista Garner. So i'm going to just go for it and blog! So I need to come up with a question....ummm. I think I got it! I went to the Halloween block party last weekend and it is hosted on Cedar Springs also known to contain gay clubs and bars and this struck up a question. I wanted to know why gay couple are conforming to society? It felt that like every gay couple that I saw one person would play the role of a man and another the role of a woman. For example I saw two guys dressed as condiments one as salt and the other as pepper. The salt had a little red bow on top while the pepper had a tie around its neck. I don't see the need of that and I really don't understand why they do that. I support homosexuality but I don't think they have to conform with societies rules about men and women. Be happy dress up as two bulls or two cows there is nothing wrong with it.

Blog 7

The topics for this week were very interesting. I never really took the time to really take in consideration the women's workforce movement. Through watching the film I saw first hand what women experienced in the workplace. We now take advantage of the fact that if someone simply looks at us wrong we simply report them, back then they were groped and ridiculed and there weren't any laws or rules that prohibited this. Women in the workplace has increased tremendously after World War II, this was a time that placed woman's foot at the door of the paid labor force. This happening proved that women were also capable of preforming any type of work that ranged from housework to building aircrafts and tanks for the war.

The job of a housewife was a main priority for all women before the 20th century. Tending to their husbands and kids were the woman's main priorities. Now a day women are waiting o get married and have kids so it is necessary for them to work in order to keep afloat in today's world.

I still believe sexual harassment is a major issue in the workplace now. It is not as obvious as it use to be but it still does arise. Women are afraid to speak up and report any type of this wrongdoing. This happens because women are afraid to admit that this does happen and therefore if they report this they think they will loose their job or respect from their coworkers. Now a days sexual harassment not only comes form the opposite sex but also the same sex. People are being more open about their sexuality and this causes confusion in the workplace. Being open in your workplace about your sexuality is fine but hitting on your coworkers is still not right. Everyone should respect everyone else and the golden rule should always be followed.

Sunday, October 14, 2007

The similarities to non western families that i read in Riverbend's journal entries was that all families have issues no matter where you live and what your background is. The majority of her entries were about the differences in Iraq from non western civilizations. The differences outnumbered the similarities. Women age 15-19 who are married there are 26%-40% of the population in Iraq. Also the family size is on average about six people. I think Riverbend did a great job at describing how family is in western civilization. The thing about family that stood out the most to me was the elder factor. I want to be a geriatric nurse so this really caught my eye. We here in the United States really forget about the older population. Our society consist of ageism. We discriminate based on age. We see them as not being useful because they are not as motile as they use to be. Anyone in the U.S. who doesn't agree with this is lying. Yes we might still have respect for them but in truth if you were the person in charge of hiring positions for mail carriers or basically anything, would you want someone young who is physically fit and extremely smart or someone with age that was extremely smart. Yes this is sad to admit but this is the way society works in the U.S. Once they cannot fend for themselves the majority of families place their elders in nursing homes for someone else to watch over them. Riverbend's family, on the other hand, adopt an elderly family member with no reluctance. She is named "the queen of the household" as a sign of respect. She is described as being frail, delicate with transparent skin. If some one here would describe her the first thing they would describe would be her grey hair. She is looked up as being inspiring because she's seen and lived through tragedy and triumph in the west. The elderly are viewed as wisdom holders who are inspiring human beings not just someone who takes up space.

Some difficulties that surrounded Riverbend was war within her country. Her family was never safe to walk down the street, there were car bombs that would spontaneously explode and other dangerous people walking the streets. Also Iraq is a poor country as compared to others. She describes many problems that she had in her home. One of which was the electricity. They only had real electricity for four hours and then the rest runs on generator power. Their air conditioner only runs for four hours and they they switch to fans only on the generator. There is unbearable heat in the area where she lived. Also the government was corrupt. If anyone in the family spoke down about the government or against anything relating to the government they could be beaten or killed. So Riverbend and her family had to watch very carefully what she said around other people. I thought that was really scary!

Blog 5

Well this week has involved a very interesting topic about women's health. I never knew that most diseases were never researched on women only an average white male. That was the most interesting thing that stood out at me when reading the chapter. I also learned about new contraceptives that i hadn't heard about. I'm just shocked that my doctor hadn't suggested any of them to me if he knew i was sexually active. But i now understand why through this chapter. It explained to me that women are ot taken to seriously in th e doctors office. We are the ones who populate the earth so our health is really just secondary to men (sarcasm). I just feel that women should be examined with more caution.

The story about the breast cancer survivor was great. I loved how she described her experience. It takes lots of guts to let loose and share a very personal experience with the world. I admire that because not many people can do that exact same thing. I just wish that if I ever come out with any type of chronic disorder or disease that i find a group of people or maybe just one person to take the time to explain to me things that relate to me. I wouldn't want to fight a disease or disorder by myself and maybe if a do overcome it I can be a mentor for someone and return the favor .

Blog 4

The topics that I read this week were very interesting. I never knew that so many women looked at themselves as being imperfect. Alot of women simply hide it. I never payed attention to how buisnesses thrive on women's weaknesses like the makeup industries. It has become so everyday normal to us that I never payed attention. Society has this perfect model for all women and if you don't fit it then your abnormal but businesses take advantage of that and try to sell you the answer for all women to achieve perfection. There are many women who disagree with this perfection but still we really don't do anything about it. Yeah we now try to push that beauty comes in different sizes, shapes, and colors but in truth we are not advancing. I can personally tell you that because I don't fit the perfect mold that we have. I'm first of all not blond and VERY far off from being a size zero! I can honestly tell yo that I love hearing the dove campaigns about real beauties but in reality when u step out of your door everyone does not think that beauty can be found in dark or voluptuous women. For example, I remember the first day that I attended TWU I went for the transfer orientation so i dressed up nicely to make a good first impression. I'm a very good person who likes to talk to anyone around me so I was really looking forward to meeting new people. Well all of my trying to socialize at the campus ended after I attended this. We were taking a campus tour when they asked us to break into groups of 10. I was in the back so I was the last to hear that. So I walked around and tried to find a group when all of a sudden some girl from one of the groups said something to her friend about me. She said " I hope she doesn't come to our group...I don't know who she thinks she is she's to fat to be wearing that" and were looking directly at me. I guess wearing jeans and a loosely fitting white blouse was just too much for her. I just don't understand why people can't accept people for who they are. Especially women we judge each other so much and compare each other in order to gain confidence. Every time you walk into a room everyone tends to pick out the prettiest girl and ugliest girl from the bunch. We are so caught up with looks. I also saw a video on you tube produced by the dove people they had some girls from the ages of 8 to 15 talking about how they think people in their school view them. They all responded with things that related to their looks. Some said that they wish they were skinnier and others said they wishes they were fuller, and others prettier. It just hurts to know that girls so young are already getting influenced by society about what being beautiful is and that ways that they should look like in order to be beautiful.

Blog 3

Wow what can I say...I thought this was a very interesting chapter and I absolutely loved the movie this week too. This has been the first movie I have sat all the way through. Love is a difficult subject because everyone has their opinion about it. After reading the chapter and readings I got a really good understanding about how women and men think about love. The author Hook from one of the readings really influenced me about "falling in love". She talks about a "click" we feel when we meet someone. She explains that it is "a mysterious connection that may or may not have to deal with love". She says that we can change our language in order to not rush feelings based on that "click". Instead of saying "I am in love" we can say "I am loving". I strongly agree with this because love takes time and is not just sexual vibes felt by both it is more complicated than that. Love is finding someone that fills the gaps in your life and relates to you as a person and is also filled with understanding and compromise.

As for the movie "Saving face" I thought it was a great movie that promoted following your heart even though everyone is against it. This movie really showed how difficult it is for someone to come out in society and how hard it is to love someone that is from a completely different generation from you. The point of the movie was simply to follow your heart no matter what everyone thinks as long as your happy!

Blog 2

Through reading all the readings I had to read this week I could relate to everything! I have always been a soccer player since first grade and i think it's crazy how guys get when a girl can kick their butts. I love that feeling...it's indescribable. Nelson's writing really made me realize that men are trying to put us down in athletics. We have capabilities that surpass them and they're scarred of that. What also got me thinking was gender typing in the Olympics. I think that's awful. Does that mean that a transgendered person will never be allowed to participate in the Olympics? What is the answer to this? Will the Olympic Federation make a special transgendered league for them? Or will they simply gender test them and whatever sex is more dominant that is what they will compete in? I really don't know how that would work but I just think that everyone should have an equal opportunity to participate in anything they want no matter sex.

I always wondered why there was no football league for women. I would love to try out! Guess what, there is a league for women but you never hear from it. The games are not broadcasted or anything. What does that say about us? We are afraid of women being able to defy the laws of expected life? It's alright to break the rules sometimes and follow dreams no matter if it is considered to be masculine or feminine. Who cares! Just live your life to the fullest don't conform or settle! Wow I should be a preacher...

This is actually the website for women football players. They are actually recruiting players!

http://www.womensfootballcentral.com/
